π 14 Types of Questions in English
(6 Basic Grammatical Types + 8 Purpose-Based Types)
In English, we can classify questions in two ways:
π 1. Grammar (structure) β how the question is formed
π 2. Purpose (meaning) β why we ask the question
β PART 1: 6 Basic Grammatical Types of Questions
These types focus on structure.
1. Yes / No Questions
π Answer = yes or no
Structure:
Auxiliary + subject + verb / complement
Examples:
- Did you call?
- Are you ready?
2. Wh- Questions
2a. With auxiliary
π Ask for information (object)
Structure:
Wh- + auxiliary + subject + verb
Examples:
- Where do you live?
- Why did she leave?
2b. Without DO auxiliary (subject questions)
π The Wh-word = subject
Structure:
Wh- + verb (no do/does/did)
Examples:
- Who called you?
- What happened?
3. Choice Questions
π Ask someone to choose
Structure:
Question + or + option
Examples:
- Do you want tea or coffee?
- Is it today or tomorrow?
4. Tag Questions
π Check or confirm information
Structure:
Statement + short question (tag)
Examples:
- Youβre coming, arenβt you?
- She called, didnβt she?
5. Wh- Indirect Questions
π A question inside another question
Structure:
Main clause + Wh- clause (statement order)
Examples:
- Do you know where he lives?
- Can you tell me why she left?
6. Yes/No Indirect Questions
π Embedded yes/no question
Structure:
Main clause + if / whether + clause
Examples:
- Do you know if heβs coming?
- Can you check whether itβs open?

These types focus on why we ask the question.
1. Negative Questions
π Show surprise or expectation
Examples:
- Donβt you like pizza?
- Isnβt she coming?
2. Echo Questions
π Show surprise or repeat information
Examples:
- You did what?
- She said what?
3. Rhetorical Questions
π No answer needed
Examples:
- Who cares?
- Isnβt life strange?
4. Declarative Questions
π Statement form + rising intonation
Examples:
- Youβre coming?
- She works here?
5. Clarification Questions
π Check understanding
Examples:
- What do you mean?
- Can you explain that?
6. Hypothetical Questions
π Ask about imaginary situations
Examples:
- What would you do if you won the lottery?
- If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
7. Polite Questions
π Make requests softer
Examples:
- Could you help me?
- Would you mind opening the window?
8. Elliptical (Short) Questions
π Short, informal questions (some words are missing)
Examples:
- Coming? (= Are you coming?)
- Need help? (= Do you need help?)

π One question can belong to both categories:
- Could you help me?
- Grammar β Yes/No question
