Inversion in English (8 Types Explained with Examples)

Inversion means we change the normal word order in a sentence.

Normally, the order is:
πŸ‘‰ Subject + Verb + Object
Example: She likes coffee.

But with inversion, the order changes to:
πŸ‘‰ Verb + Subject

For example:

βœ… Normal: You are ready.
❓ Inversion: Are you ready?
(Here, the verb be comes before the subject.)

βœ… Normal: He has visited Paris.
❓ Inversion: Has he visited Paris?
(Here, the auxiliary verb has comes before the subject.)

Here are 8 important types of inversion:

1. Questions

We invert subject and auxiliary verb (or β€œbe”) to make a question.

βœ… Normal: You are ready.
❓ Inversion: Are you ready?

βœ… Normal: She can swim.
❓ Inversion: Can she swim?

βœ… Normal: They have finished.
❓ Inversion: Have they finished?

2. Conditionals (Without if)

Sometimes, especially in formal English, we can make conditional sentences without if by using inversion.

βœ… Normal: If I had known, I would have told you.
➑ Inversion: Had I known, I would have told you.

βœ… Normal: If you should need help, call me.
➑ Inversion: Should you need help, call me.

βœ… Normal: If he were rich, he would travel the world.
➑ Inversion: Were he rich, he would travel the world.

3. After Negative or Restrictive Adverbials

When we begin a sentence with a negative or restrictive adverbial, we often use inversion.
(Never, rarely, hardly, little, not only, only then, etc.)

βœ… Normal: I had never seen such a view.
➑ Inversion: Never had I seen such a view.

βœ… Normal: She rarely goes out at night.
➑ Inversion: Rarely does she go out at night.

βœ… Normal: You can only understand it then.
➑ Inversion: Only then can you understand it.

4. So … that / Such … that

We sometimes use so and such at the beginning, followed by inversion, for emphasis.

βœ… Normal: He was so tired that he fell asleep immediately.
➑ Inversion: So tired was he that he fell asleep immediately.

βœ… Normal: It was such a beautiful day that we went to the park.
➑ Inversion: Such a beautiful day was it that we went to the park.

5. Agreement (So / Neither / Nor)

When we want to say that something is the same for another person, we use so, neither, nor with inversion.

βœ… Statement: I like her.
➑ Agreement response: So does Maria.

βœ… Statement: I don’t like spicy food.
➑ Agreement response: Neither do I. / Nor do I.

βœ… Agreement inversion in one sentence:
– I like coffee and so does Jack.
– She has been to England and so has Eric.

– I don’t like tea and neither does she. I don’t like tea and nor does she.
– I am not from the USA and neither are you. I am not from the USA and nor are you.

6. Wishes with May

We use inversion with may to express wishes or hopes in a formal style.

βœ… May you be happy!
βœ… May all your dreams come true!
βœ… May the new year bring you joy!

7. Here / There

We use inversion when a sentence begins with here or there + a verb of movement or existence.

βœ… Here comes the bus!
βœ… There goes my wallet!
βœ… Here is your coffee.
βœ… There stands the old castle.

8. Direct Speech

When we report direct speech with verbs like say, reply, ask, we sometimes put the verb before the subject.

βœ… Normal: β€œI’m ready,” she said.
➑ Inversion: β€œI’m ready,” said she. (formal/literary)

βœ… Normal: β€œI’ll help you,” John replied.
➑ Inversion: β€œI’ll help you,” replied John.

βœ… Normal: β€œWhat is it?” the teacher asked.
➑ Inversion: β€œWhat is it?” asked the teacher.
