3 Levels of Language

In English, we can speak in 3 different levels:

1. Rude – Very direct and sometimes hurtful. People may feel upset. Use only if you are angry or joking with close friends.
2. Neutral – Calm and safe. Not rude, not very polite. Good for everyday situations with people you know a little.
3. Polite – Friendly and respectful. Shows good manners. Use with teachers, bosses, strangers, or anyone you want to impress.

Knowing these 3 levels helps you choose the right words for the right situation.


15 Sets of Everyday English Phrases

1. Sit down / Take a seat / Please be seated
Rude: Sit down! – Direct command.
Neutral: Take a seat. – Calm, simple.
Polite: Please be seated. – Friendly, respectful.

2. How should I know? / Sorry, I don’t know / I’m not sure, but I can check for you
Rude: How should I know? – Dismissive.
Neutral: Sorry, I don’t know. – Simple, neutral answer.
Polite: I’m not sure, but I can check for you. – Helpful and polite.

3. It sucks! / I don’t like it / It’s not really my favorite
Rude: It sucks! – Very strong negative opinion.
Neutral: I don’t like it. – Simple and calm.
Polite: It’s not really my favorite. – Soft way to disagree.

4. You’re wrong! / I don’t think that’s correct / I’m afraid I see it a bit differently
Rude: You’re wrong! – Strong, can hurt feelings.
Neutral: I don’t think that’s correct. – Calm, safe disagreement.
Polite: I’m afraid I see it a bit differently. – Very respectful way to disagree.

5. I don’t have time for that / I’m busy at the moment / I’d love to help, but I’m in the middle of something
Rude: I don’t have time for that! – Harsh and impatient.
Neutral: I’m busy at the moment. – Simple and clear.
Polite: I’d love to help, but I’m in the middle of something. – Polite, shows you care.

6. Don’t talk to me like that / I don’t like your tone / You could say that a bit more nicely
Rude: Don’t talk to me like that! – Angry.
Neutral: I don’t like your tone. – Calm, expresses discomfort.
Polite: You could say that a bit more nicely. – Respectful suggestion.

7. Get lost! / Please, go away / No, thank you. I’m not interested at the moment
Rude: Get lost! – Harsh, unfriendly.
Neutral: Please, go away. – Calm but firm.
Polite: No, thank you. I’m not interested at the moment. – Polite refusal.

8. Shut up! / Please, be quiet / Could we have some quiet, please?
Rude: Shut up! – Very rude.
Neutral: Please, be quiet. – Direct but safe.
Polite: Could we have some quiet, please? – Respectful and polite.

9. You messed up! / You made a mistake / There seems to be a small error
Rude: You messed up! – Blames someone sharply.
Neutral: You made a mistake. – Simple, calm.
Polite: There seems to be a small error. – Gentle way to correct someone.

10. Get out of my way! / Sorry, but you’re in the way / Excuse me, could I get by?
Rude: Get out of my way! – Angry, forceful.
Neutral: Sorry, but you’re in the way. – Calm, neutral.
Polite: Excuse me, could I get by? – Respectful request.

11. You’re such a liar! / I don’t believe you / I’m having a hard time believing that
Rude: You’re such a liar! – Accusing, rude.
Neutral: I don’t believe you. – Calm, simple disbelief.
Polite: I’m having a hard time believing that. – Polite, soft disagreement.

12. Quit whining! / Stop complaining / Try to stay positive, okay?
Rude: Quit whining! – Harsh, rude.
Neutral: Stop complaining. – Simple instruction.
Polite: Try to stay positive, okay? – Encouraging and polite.

13. That’s a rip-off! / That’s too expensive for me / It’s a bit more than I expected to pay
Rude: That’s a rip-off! – Very strong, rude.
Neutral: That’s too expensive for me. – Simple and clear.
Polite: It’s a bit more than I expected to pay. – Polite way to complain.

14. Get out. You’re done / You’re fired / We’ve decided to let you go
Rude: Get out. You’re done! – Harsh and forceful.
Neutral: You’re fired. – Calm, direct.
Polite: We’ve decided to let you go. – Respectful way to fire someone.

15. I don’t care what you think / I can decide by myself / I’d rather decide on my own
Rude: I don’t care what you think! – Dismissive, rude.
Neutral: I can decide by myself. – Simple, clear.
Polite: I’d rather decide on my own. – Polite, respectful way to say no input needed.
