⭐ The Subjunctive in English — Easy Explanation

The subjunctive is a special form of a verb in English.
We use it when we talk about unreal, imaginary, wishes, important requests, or formal situations.

The subjunctive is not used very often in everyday English, but English speakers still use it — especially in expressions like:

  • If I were you
  • I wish it were different
  • It’s important that you be on time

🧠 First: What Is a “Mood”?

In English, verbs can express mood (the speaker’s attitude).

There are 3 moods in English:

  1. Indicative → normal statements and questions
Example: I like pizza. / Do you live in Canada?
  2. Imperative → commands
Example: Sit down. / Please stop talking.
  3. Subjunctive → unreal, imagined, wished, or formally requested situations
Example: I wish I were rich.

The subjunctive is the one that feels different or strange.

🟦 Two Main Types of Subjunctive

1️⃣ Present Subjunctive

We use the base form of the verb (no -s, no -ed, no changes) after certain verbs, adjectives, and nouns that express importance, suggestion, or necessity.

Structure:

👉 Verb/Adjective/Noun + that + subject + base verb

Examples:

  • It’s important that she be on time.
  • The teacher suggested that we study more.
  • They requested that he speak slowly.

💡 Notice: “be” stays “be” — not “is,” “are,” or “was.”

2️⃣ Past Subjunctive

The past subjunctive looks like the simple past, but the meaning is unreal or imaginary.

The most important rule:

👉 Use WERE (not was) after I / he / she / it when talking about unreal situations.

Examples:

  • If I were taller, I could play basketball.
  • I wish she were here right now.
  • If it were possible, I would move to Spain.

Meaning: These situations are not true now.

✔️ If Clauses for Unreal or Imaginary Situations

  • If I were rich, I would travel the world.
  • If she were here, she would help us.

These sentences are hypothetical — not real.

✔️ Formal Requests, Demands, or Recommendations

  • They insisted that he pay the fine.
  • The doctor recommended that she rest.
  • We ask that everyone be quiet.

✔️ Fixed Expressions (Set Phrases)

Some expressions always use the subjunctive:

  • God bless you.
  • Long live the King.
  • So be it.
  • Heaven forbid.

👀 Quick Review

The subjunctive is used when:

✔ The situation is imagined or unreal
✔ You are expressing a wish or regret
✔ You are making a formal request or recommendation
✔ You are using a fixed traditional expression

🎉 Final Tip

If you think:

Is it real? → Subjunctive is not needed
Is it unreal, imagined, wished, formal, or emotional? → Subjunctive is probably used.
