What is BEEN? (Easy English Explanation)

1️⃣ First: What is BEEN?

BEEN is the past participle of the verb BE.

BE → was / were → been

⭐ The Golden Rule:

BEEN always needs a helper.

The helper verb is HAVE:

  • have
  • has
  • had

❌ WRONG: I been tired.
✅ CORRECT: I have been tired.

BEEN can never be alone.

2️⃣ Why does BEEN need HAVE?

Because BEEN is a past participle.

Past participles are used in:

✔ The 3 Perfect Tenses

  • Present Perfect → have/has been
  • Past Perfect → had been
  • Future Perfect → will have been

✔ The 3 Perfect Progressive Tenses

  • Present Perfect Progressive → have/has been + verb-ing
  • Past Perfect Progressive → had been + verb-ing
  • Future Perfect Progressive → will have been + verb-ing

Now let’s look at the main uses.

The 7 Main Uses of BEEN

1️⃣ Life Experience / Visit

We use have/has been to + place to talk about life experience.

It means: you went there and came back.

  • I have been to Japan.
  • She has been to Paris three times.
  • We have never been to Canada.

⚠ Compare:

  • I have been to London. (I visited and returned.)
  • I have gone to London. (I am still there.)

2️⃣ State (with Duration)

We use have/has/had been + adjective/noun to talk about a situation that started in the past and continues.

  • He had been unhappy for months before he quit.

3️⃣ Ongoing Action (with Duration)

This is the perfect progressive form:

have/has/had been + verb-ing

It shows an action that started in the past and continues (or just stopped).

  • I have been working for 3 hours.
  • She has been studying all night.
  • They have been waiting since 9 a.m.
  • He had been driving for 6 hours before he stopped.

This emphasizes the action, not just the state.

have/has/had + been + past participle

  • The work has been finished.
  • The food has been prepared.
  • The problem had been solved.

Structure:

This talks about unreal past situations.

could have been

To guess about the past.
