📚 How to Use BE SUPPOSED TO in English

BE SUPPOSED TO is a very common expression in English. We use it in several different ways to talk about expectations, plans, rules, things people say, and things that were expected to happen but didn’t.

⚠️ Important Grammar Point

The expression SUPPOSED TO must be used with the verb BE.

You cannot use supposed to by itself.

✅ Basic Structure

Subject + BE + supposed to + base verb

The verb BE can be:

am • is • are • was • were

Examples:

  • I am supposed to study.
  • She is supposed to call me.
  • They are supposed to arrive at 8.
  • He was supposed to help me.

👤 1. EXPECTATION

We use BE SUPPOSED TO when someone expects you to do something.

It is similar to:

Examples:

  • You are supposed to finish your homework today.
  • I am supposed to call my boss every morning.
  • Students are supposed to be quiet during the test.
  • She is supposed to take care of her little brother.
  • We are supposed to clean the office every Friday.

💡 Example:

Your mother expects you to be home by 9 p.m.

➡️ You are supposed to be home by 9 p.m.

The important idea is that someone has an expectation about what you should do.

📅 2. PLAN / SCHEDULE

We use BE SUPPOSED TO to talk about something that is planned or scheduled to happen.

It is similar to:

👉 It is planned to…
👉 It is scheduled to…

Examples:

  • The train is supposed to arrive at 8:00.
  • The movie is supposed to start at 7:30.
  • The bus is supposed to arrive in ten minutes.
  • My flight is supposed to leave at 6:45.
  • The package is supposed to arrive tomorrow.
  • The new restaurant is supposed to open next week.

⚠️ Important:
Supposed to does not mean that something will definitely happen.

The train is supposed to arrive at 8.

= 8:00 is the scheduled time, but the train could be late.

🚫 3. RULE / PROHIBITION

We often use NOT SUPPOSED TO to talk about something that is not allowed.

It is similar to:

👉 You are not allowed to…
👉 You shouldn’t…
👉 It is against the rules to…

Examples:

  • You are not supposed to park here.
  • You are not supposed to smoke in this building.
  • You are not supposed to take pictures.
  • You are not supposed to touch that.
  • We are not supposed to use our phones during class.
  • You are not supposed to feed the animals.

⏪ Past Rule

We can also use the past form to talk about a rule that applied in the past.

You were not supposed to take pictures.

➡️ You took pictures, so you broke the rule.

Compare:

You are not supposed to take pictures.
➡️ Don’t take pictures. It’s against the rules.

You were not supposed to take pictures.
➡️ You took pictures, but it wasn’t allowed.

💬 4. PEOPLE SAY / BELIEVE

We use BE SUPPOSED TO when people say or believe that something is true.

It is similar to:

👉 I’ve heard…
👉 It is believed that…

Examples:

  • This restaurant is supposed to be excellent.
  • He is supposed to be very rich.
  • She is supposed to be the best teacher in the school.
  • That movie is supposed to be really scary.

  • That neighborhood is supposed to be very safe.

💡 Example:

I’ve heard that this restaurant is excellent.

➡️ This restaurant is supposed to be excellent.

You are not necessarily saying that you know it is true. You are saying that this is what people say or what you have heard.

⏪ 5. WAS/WERE SUPPOSED TO — BUT DIDN’T HAPPEN

This is a very common use of the past form:

was/were supposed to + base verb

We use it when something was expected or planned to happen, but it didn’t happen.

Examples:

  • I was supposed to call you, but I forgot.
  • We were supposed to meet at 7, but he never showed up.
  • She was supposed to come to the party, but she got sick.
  • He was supposed to pick me up, but he didn’t show up.
  • The package was supposed to arrive yesterday, but it never came.
  • The plane was supposed to leave at 6, but it was canceled.
  • I was supposed to finish the project yesterday, but I didn’t have enough time.
  • They were supposed to get married in June, but they broke up.

💡 Think of it this way:

It was planned/expected → but it didn’t happen.

I was supposed to call you, but I forgot.

➡️ I planned/was expected to call you.
➡️ I didn’t call you.
