Explanation and Extra Activities
Difference Between “Made of,” “Made from,” “Made with,” and “Made out of”
These phrases all talk about what something is created from, but they are used in different ways:
- Made of
- Use “made of” when the material used to create something is still recognizable.
- Example: The table is made of wood. (You can still see the wood.)
- Made from
- Use “made from” when the material changes its form and is not easily recognizable in the final product.
- Example: Paper is made from trees. (The trees don’t look like trees anymore.)
- Made with
- Use “made with” to focus on one of the ingredients or materials used, often in cooking or manufacturing.
- Example: This cake is made with chocolate. (Chocolate is one ingredient.)
- Made out of
- Use “made out of” when something is created by transforming something else into a new form, often referring to recycling or creative use of materials.
- Example: This sculpture is made out of old car parts.
Summary:
- Made of: Material is still visible (The door is made of metal).
- Made from: Material has changed (Wine is made from grapes).
- Made with: Focus on one ingredient (The salad is made with tomatoes).
- Made out of: Focus on transformation (The chair is made out of cardboard).
