How to form Future Questions
An easy way for ESL students to make future questions with “be going to” (or “gonna”) is to follow a simple formula.
Simple Formula for Future Questions:
- Question word (Where, What, When, etc.) +
- Be (am, is, are) +
- Subject (I, you, he, they, etc.) +
- Going to (or gonna) +
- Verb (go, do, buy, etc.) +
- Rest of the sentence (if necessary).
Example Breakdown:
- Statement: “I’m gonna go shopping this weekend.”
- Where Question: “Where are you going to go shopping?”
- What Question: “What are you going to buy?”
- Statement: “She’s gonna visit her friend tomorrow.”
- Where Question: “Where is she going to visit her friend?”
- When Question: “When is she going to visit her friend?”
Easy Steps:
- Start with a question word:
- Use “Where” for place, “What” for objects/actions, “When” for time, etc.
- Use the correct form of the verb “be”:
- For I, use am: “Am I going to…”
- For you/we/they, use are: “Are you going to…”
- For he/she/it, use is: “Is he going to…”
- Add the subject:
- “Where are you going to…” or “What is she going to…”
- Add the main verb (action):
- “Where are you going to go?”
- “What is she going to buy?”
- Finish the question:
- Add extra details like time or place if needed.
- “What are you going to buy at the mall?”
Practice Examples:
- Statement: “They’re gonna watch a movie tonight.”
- What Question: “What are they going to watch?”
- When Question: “When are they going to watch the movie?”
- Statement: “We’re gonna have a picnic this afternoon.”
- Where Question: “Where are you going to have the picnic?”
