How to Make Basic Questions in English (Present Tense)

In English, there are two main types of questions: Yes/No Questions and Information (Wh-) Questions.

1. Yes/No Questions

These are questions that can be answered with “yes” or “no.”

How to Make Yes/No Questions:

To make a yes/no question in the present, follow this structure:

  • (Do/Does) + (subject) + (main verb)

Use “do” for I, you, we, they and “does” for he, she, it.

Examples:

  • Do you like pizza? → (Answer: Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.)
  • Does she work at the hospital? → (Answer: Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.)

2. Information (Wh-) Questions

These are questions that ask for more details and cannot be answered with just “yes” or “no.” They start with a Wh- word.

Common Wh- Words:

  • What (for things)
  • Where (for places)
  • When (for time)
  • Who (for people)
  • Why (for reasons)
  • How (for the way something is done)

How to Make Information (Wh-) Questions:

To form a Wh- question in the present tense, use this structure:

  • (Wh- word) + do/does + (subject) + (main verb)

Examples:

  • What do you like to eat? → (Answer: I like to eat pasta.)
  • Where does he live? → (Answer: He lives in New York.)
  • Why do they study English? → (Answer: They study because they want a better job.)
  • How does she get to school? → (Answer: She takes the bus.)
