No Vocab? No Problem!

When you’re learning English and you don’t know a word, you can still communicate by explaining what you mean using other, simpler words. This is called paraphrasing or circumlocution. It’s a great skill to help you continue a conversation without getting stuck!

Here’s how you can do it:

Steps to Paraphrase or Explain Words:

  1. Describe the meaning: Think about what the word means and use a phrase or a few words to explain it.
    • Example: If you don’t know the word unemployed, you can say, “People who don’t have jobs.”
  2. Use examples: You can give examples to explain the word.
    • Example: If you don’t know how to say furniture, you can say, “Things like tables, chairs, and sofas.”
  3. Talk about what it does: You can explain the word by talking about its purpose or what it’s used for.
    • Example: If you don’t know the word refrigerator, you can say, “It’s the thing you put food in to keep it cold.”
  4. Use opposites: Sometimes, describing the opposite of a word can help.
    • Example: If you don’t know the word expensive, you can say, “It’s not cheap.”
  5. Think about synonyms: Use a similar word you already know.
    • Example: If you don’t know the word angry, you can say mad.

Examples:

  • Dentist → “The doctor who takes care of your teeth.”
  • Flight → “The trip you take by plane.”
  • Vegetarian → “A person who doesn’t eat meat.”
  • Bored → “You feel like there’s nothing to do.”

Practice Tips:

  • Don’t worry if your explanation is long. It’s more important to communicate clearly.
  • The more you practice, the easier it will get!
  • You can use gestures, examples, or even point to things around you to help explain.

By using these strategies, you can still express yourself even if you don’t know every word. Keep practicing, and over time, your vocabulary will grow!
