8 Advanced Phrasal Verbs Native Speakers Use Every Day

Want to sound more natural in English? These 8 advanced phrasal verbs are extremely common in everyday conversations, but many English learners don’t use them often.

Each section includes an easy definition, grammar, and lots of real-life examples.

1. Come across

Meaning: to find or discover something by chance.

Easy English: You weren’t looking for it, but you found it.

Pattern: come across + noun

Examples:

She came across a great café by accident.
I came across your email while organizing my inbox.
They came across a rare book at a secondhand bookstore.
We came across some useful information online.
I came across your YouTube channel yesterday!

Mini dialogue:

A: How did you find this restaurant?

B: I just came across it while walking around.

2. End up

Meaning: to finally be in a situation, place, or condition, often unexpectedly.

Easy English: The final result is different from what you planned.

Pattern: end up + -ing

Examples:

She wanted to be a doctor but ended up becoming a teacher.
We got lost and ended up in another city.
I didn’t want to go to the party, but I ended up having fun.
They argued about dinner and ended up ordering pizza.

3. Get around to

Meaning: to finally find time to do something.

Easy English: You’ve been busy, but you finally do it.

Pattern: get around to + -ing

I need to organize my desk, but I never get around to it.

4. Tag along

Meaning: to go somewhere with someone.

Easy English: Join someone who is already going.

Pattern: tag along (with someone)

5. Get away with

Meaning: to do something wrong without being caught or punished.

6. Rule out

Meaning: to decide that something is not possible.

Easy English: Eliminate it as a possibility.

Pattern: rule out + noun

Examples:

Scientists are trying to rule out other causes.

We need to rule out every possibility.
The mechanic ruled out a battery problem.
We haven’t ruled it out yet.

7. Come down to

Meaning: to ultimately depend on one important thing.

Easy English: After considering everything, this is what matters most.

Pattern: come down to + noun / clause

Examples:

It all comes down to money.

Winning often comes down to preparation.
At the end of the day, it comes down to trust.

8. Fall through

Meaning: when a plan or agreement fails to happen.

Easy English: It was planned, but it didn’t happen.

Pattern: plans / deal + fall through

Examples:
