Explanations + Extra Practice Activities

What Is an Adverb Clause?

An adverb clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb and works like an adverb.
It tells us when, why, how, where, or under what condition something happens.

Adverb clauses begin with subordinating conjunctions such as when, because, if, although, so that, etc.

Adverb clause = conjunction + subject + verb

Examples:

  • When the class ends, I go home.
  • She studies because she wants to improve.
  • I’ll follow you wherever you go.

Each clause adds extra information and helps you make longer, more interesting sentences.

Comma Rules for Adverb Clauses

1. Adverb clause FIRST → Use a comma

  • When the movie ends, we will go home.
  • Because he was sick, he stayed in bed.

2. Main clause first → NO comma

  • We will go home when the movie ends.
  • He stayed in bed because he was sick.

Short rule:
Clause first = comma
Clause last = no comma
