🎓 UPGRADE YOUR ENGLISH: Verb Levels Explained

In English, beginner verbs (A1–A2) are often very general. You can use them in many different situations, but they’re not very specific.
As you move to intermediate (B1–B2) and advanced (C1–C2) levels, the verbs often have a more specific or narrow meaning, and some are more formal, academic, or even literary.

Let’s look at how a simple verb like “buy” can be upgraded to sound more fluent and precise.


🛒 Buy → Purchase → Acquire

  • Buy (A1) = to pay money for something
    🗣 I want to buy a new phone.
  • Purchase (B2) = a more formal word for “buy”
    🗣 She purchased a jacket online.
  • Acquire (C1) = to get something, usually with effort, time, or money
    🗣 He acquired several properties over the years.

  • Think about (A1) = to have something in your mind

  • Fall (A1) = to go down suddenly
    🗣 Be careful not to fall.
  • Crash (B2) = to fall or hit something hard and fast

  • Help with (A1) = to make something easier for someone

  • Catch (A1) = to grab something moving

  • Capture (B2) = to catch someone or something that is escaping

  • Blow up (A2) = to explode or make something explode (informal)

  • Explode (B2) = to burst with force and noise
