🌟 How to Use COULD in English

Could is a modal auxiliary verb.

👉 This means it cannot be used by itself. It must always be followed by another verb (the base verb).

Use could to ask someone to do something politely.

Examples

Use could to ask if it is okay to do something.

Use could to talk about something someone was able to do in the past.

Use could to report what someone said using can.

Use could to talk about what is possible if something happens.

Use couldn’t have to say you are sure something was impossible in the past.

Examples

Nobody told him about the meeting. He couldn’t have known.
We were hiding behind a wall. She couldn’t have seen us.
They started only five minutes ago. They couldn’t have finished already.

Use could have to say someone had the chance to do something but didn’t.

Use could when you are guessing because you are not sure.
