Explanations and Extra Practice Activities
Inversion in English (8 Types Explained with Examples)
Inversion means we change the normal word order in a sentence.
Normally, the order is:
π Subject + Verb + Object
Example: She likes coffee.
But with inversion, the order changes to:
π Verb + Subject
For example:
β
Normal: You are ready.
β Inversion: Are you ready?
(Here, the verb be comes before the subject.)
β
Normal: He has visited Paris.
β Inversion: Has he visited Paris?
(Here, the auxiliary verb has comes before the subject.)
Here are 8 important types of inversion:
1. Questions
We invert subject and auxiliary verb (or βbeβ) to make a question.
β
Normal: You are ready.
β Inversion: Are you ready?
β
Normal: She can swim.
β Inversion: Can she swim?
β
Normal: They have finished.
β Inversion: Have they finished?
2. Conditionals (Without if)
Sometimes, especially in formal English, we can make conditional sentences without if by using inversion.
β
Normal: If I had known, I would have told you.
β‘ Inversion: Had I known, I would have told you.
β
Normal: If you should need help, call me.
β‘ Inversion: Should you need help, call me.
β
Normal: If he were rich, he would travel the world.
β‘ Inversion: Were he rich, he would travel the world.
3. After Negative or Restrictive Adverbials
When we begin a sentence with a negative or restrictive adverbial, we often use inversion.
(Never, rarely, hardly, little, not only, only then, etc.)
β
Normal: I had never seen such a view.
β‘ Inversion: Never had I seen such a view.
β
Normal: She rarely goes out at night.
β‘ Inversion: Rarely does she go out at night.
β
Normal: You can only understand it then.
β‘ Inversion: Only then can you understand it.
4. So β¦ that / Such β¦ that
We sometimes use so and such at the beginning, followed by inversion, for emphasis.
β
Normal: He was so tired that he fell asleep immediately.
β‘ Inversion: So tired was he that he fell asleep immediately.
β
Normal: It was such a beautiful day that we went to the park.
β‘ Inversion: Such a beautiful day was it that we went to the park.
5. Agreement (So / Neither / Nor)
When we want to say that something is the same for another person, we use so, neither, nor with inversion.
β
Statement: I like her.
β‘ Agreement response: So does Maria.
β
Statement: I donβt like spicy food.
β‘ Agreement response: Neither do I. / Nor do I.
β
Agreement inversion in one sentence:
β I like coffee and so does Jack.
β She has been to England and so has Eric.
β I donβt like tea and neither does she. I don’t like tea and nor does she.
β I am not from the USA and neither are you. I am not from the USA and nor are you.
6. Wishes with May
We use inversion with may to express wishes or hopes in a formal style.
β
May you be happy!
β
May all your dreams come true!
β
May the new year bring you joy!
7. Here / There
We use inversion when a sentence begins with here or there + a verb of movement or existence.
β
Here comes the bus!
β
There goes my wallet!
β
Here is your coffee.
β
There stands the old castle.
8. Direct Speech
When we report direct speech with verbs like say, reply, ask, we sometimes put the verb before the subject.
β
Normal: βIβm ready,β she said.
β‘ Inversion: βIβm ready,β said she. (formal/literary)
β
Normal: βIβll help you,β John replied.
β‘ Inversion: βIβll help you,β replied John.
β
Normal: βWhat is it?β the teacher asked.
β‘ Inversion: βWhat is it?β asked the teacher.
