π The 9 Parts of Speech in English
The Building Blocks of Every Sentence
Every word in English belongs to one of these 9 categories. Understanding them will help you speak, write, and understand English more easily!
1. Verbs β‘
Show an action, a state, or help another verb.
- Action:Β run, eat, write, think, sing
- State (Linking):Β be, seem, become, feel, look
- Helping:Β can, will, have, do, must
π‘ “She runs fast.” (action)
π‘ “She is happy.” (state)
π‘ “She can run fast.” (helping + action)
2. Nouns π€
Name a person, place, thing, or idea.
- Person:Β teacher, Maria, doctor, friend
- Place:Β London, school, park, home
- Thing:Β book, dog, car, phone
- Idea:Β happiness, freedom, love, peace
π‘ “Maria lives in London.”
π‘ “Happiness is important.”
3. Pronouns π
Stand in for a noun (and stand alone!).
- Subject:Β I, you, he, she, it, we, they
- Object:Β me, you, him, her, it, us, them
- Possessive:Β mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs
- Reflexive:Β myself, yourself, himself, herself
- Demonstrative:Β this, that, these, those
- Indefinite:Β someone, everyone, nothing, all
- Interrogative:Β who, which, what

π‘ “That book is mine.” (possessive)
π‘ “Everyone loves ice cream.” (indefinite)
4. Adjectives π¨
Describe a noun or pronoun.
- Descriptive:Β big, red, happy, beautiful, tall
- Quantitative:Β three, many, few, some, several
- Predicate:Β The dog isΒ fluffy.Β (after a linking verb)
π‘ “The big dog is fluffy.”
π‘ “She bought three red apples.”
5. Adverbs β
Describe a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
- Modifying a Verb:Β She runsΒ quickly.Β (How?)
- Modifying an Adjective:Β It isΒ veryΒ big.Β (How much?)
- Modifying an Adverb:Β She drivesΒ extremelyΒ slowly.Β (How slowly?)
π‘ Many adverbs end in -ly, but not all!
now, here, always, very are also adverbs.
6. Prepositions π
Show relationships of time, place, and direction.
- Time:Β at, on, in, before, after, during
- Place:Β in, on, under, behind, between, beside
- Direction:Β to, from, into, onto, through, across
π‘ “The book is on the table.” (place)
π‘ “I’ll see you at 5 PM.” (time)
π‘ “She walked to the store.” (direction)
7. Conjunctions π
Connect words, phrases, or clauses.
- Coordinating (FANBOYS):Β For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So
- Subordinating:Β because, although, while, since, when, if
- Correlative (pairs):Β both…and, either…or, neither…nor
π‘ “I like tea and coffee.” (connects words)
π‘ “I like tea, but I don’t like coffee.” (connects clauses)
π‘ “She is both smart and kind.” (correlative pair)
8. Determiners π
Introduce and limit a noun.
- Articles:Β a, an, the
- Possessives:Β my, your, his, her, our, their
- Demonstratives:Β this, that, these, those
- Quantifiers:Β some, any, many, few, several

π‘ “These apples are fresh.”
π‘ “I have some money.”
9. Interjections π²
Express strong emotion or surprise.
- Common interjections:Β Wow! Ouch! Hey! Oh! Oops! Yay! Well…
