10 Rules for Silent Letters in English

Rule #1: A silent “E” makes the other vowel long.

If a word ends with the letter E, and there’s one vowel before one consonant, the vowel usually says its long sound (its name), and the E is silent.

Examples:

  • cap → cape
  • kit → kite
  • mad → made
  • bit → bite
  • hug → huge
  • hop → hope
  • fin → fine

🟡 Note: The E doesn’t make a sound, but it changes how the vowel is pronounced.

Here is another way to explain Rule #1: A silent “E” at the end of a word makes the vowel before it say its name (a long vowel sound).
